History: Eggert Oft immigrated from Hopen, Germany with his parents in 1869 and moved to Bennington in 1877. Eggert bought a farm 1/2 mile west of town in 1880. He met and married Rosa Lage in 1882. They had five children: Katy, Minnie, Meta, Hans, and Nancy. The family farm prospered and their business ventures expanded to town and included Oft's Hotel (1888), a store, livery, and other buinesses. In 1910, they built this dream home. Years later their youngest daughter Nancy and her husband Roy moved in and took care of her elderly parents. Nancy's daughter Jeanette and husband Enno moved in after her parents passed away. They had two sons, Gordon and Alex. Jeanette survived Enno but passed away in 2007. Gordon and his wife Linda inherited the home making the 4th generation living there. They thought the home, family, and local history should be shared with others and started the 2-year renovation project. The Oft-Gordon House was listed on the National Resister of Historical Places in 2010, the same year Ofts Bed and Breakfast opened.
Historical Displays: The house is filled with period funiture and antiques and contains more than a dozen historical displays featuring century old newpapers, postcards, and photographs of the family, village, and area. The 'Girls Room' is staged as Nancy's bedroom in 1910. It contains her brass bed, feather mattress, family quilts, toys, dolls, children's china set, and Rosa's wedding dress. Guests can enjoy these displays at their leisure.
