Nebraska has a budding wine industry that is worth noticing. In the early 1900s, approximately 5,000 acres of Nebraska land was devoted to growing grapes for wine. A combination of poor weather conditions and the Prohibition caused the industry to shrink drastically in the first half of that century, but it is making a well-deserved comeback today.
Of course, most Nebraska wineries are too small and too new to distribute their wine widely. In order to discover these wines, you need to go to them. If you live in Nebraska, you can proudly serve locally grown wine at your dinner parties. If you live out-of-state, you are will astonish your friends by serving them award-winning Nebraska wine. Let the wine tasting begin!
Crafting a getaway around wine tasting can be fun, whether you are traveling with your sweetie or a group of friends. Choose an area that has several wineries within fifty miles or so, and start planning your itinerary. Most wineries are open to visitation year round, with tasting rooms to help you select your favorite bottles, and shops where you can purchase them.
There are many ways to organize a wine tasting trip, and all should involve Nebraska Bed and Breakfasts, where you will be housed in comfort and well fed. You can all pile into a car, pick a designated driver, and visit as many wineries as you can fit into one day. Or you can travel by bicycle, visiting fewer wineries but really earning that glass of wine.
Eastern Nebraska is home to most of the state’s wineries, although they are to be found throughout the state. There are about seven wineries in and around Lincoln, and almost ten along the Missouri River. Use one Nebraska Inn as your home base and take several days to visit all the wineries in that area. Then head west, stay at several Nebraska Bed and Breakfasts over the course of a few days, and visit every winery in the state.
