Responsible Travel Report
Vol. 11, No. 2/February 2012

Dear Friends,

I’m always impressed by the resilience of the travel and tourism industry. A recent report from the UN World Tourism Organization revealed that, despite our well-documented global economic challenges, 2011 saw a 4% increase in international tourist arrivals. 2012 is expected to be the first year that worldwide tourism tops the 1 billion mark. It’s incredible to think about the enormity of scale our industry operates on, and thought-provoking to ponder just how critical tourism destinations and businesses are to our collective future.

I find statistics like these inspirational. Here at STI, we love the work we do, supporting destination leaders as they build for tomorrow, protecting their communities and innovating their brands. We envision a world where tourism is a real engine, not only for economic growth, but also cultural authenticity and environmental conservation. President Obama seems to agree that investing in tourism can pay real dividends, as evidenced by the recent announcement of a significant initiative designed to increase US tourism (and with it, more than 1 million jobs) over the next decade.

We’re proud to continue our role as leaders in sustaining this industry for the long run. As you’ll find in this newsletter we’re making lots of exciting progress all the time, partnering with new destinations and businesses worldwide, while offering practical tools for the small to medium-enterprises that interact with growing number of travelers every single day.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if we can support you in any way.

Regards,
